Coaching Meeting with Bahia Shehab
Analyze the themes (before the technical part).
After analyzing the themes, you select sample images to work with
Divide thematically, which of them is using "dramatic photogrphy", etc...
Things to analyze:
- Photography style
- Typography treatment
- Layout of the design
Step 1: Thematic (Conceptual) Analysis (Psychological treatment)
Heroization & Allegorization of women are 2 themes.
Look at the preconcieved ideas of what a shahid is, and what a hero is. And this is being manipulated graphically to represent these preconcieved ideas of a shahid/a hero, and the discourse of martyrdom.
Thematic Analysis to understand from a cultural perspective (historically speaking, what do these symbols mean in this culture.
And why these symbols can influence psychologically? (It's about making your reader understand the cultural context that keads to this psychological influence because this is how you impact people = by touching their emotions using Arabic calligraphy, imitating Hollywood styles; using Islamic motifs (giving themselves visual legitimacy by using codes/motifs from the Islamic culture).
On one hand, they are playing on Islamic visual culture and on the other, they are introducing Western & Hollywood style imagery & photo editing = they are appealing to young adults.
---> creation of a bastardized identity (playing on the identity factor) (a mixture of a little bit of this and a little bit of that).
The formula the IS uses: How much of it is Islamic and How much of it is Hollywood? how much do they appeal to the sentiment? (also looking at photo editing techniques).
Start writing into a structure/Work on the structure/outline:
Step 2: Technical Analysis
- how many time have they represented a martyr's face glowing/smiling man?
- how is this hero figure? (horses, flags, etc...)
- Draw/Spot patterns (don't give sequential analysis)
-
The detailed analysis of each photo could serve as a argument support for the patterns I find.
(so redivide differently when structuring the final thesis)
Also,
"Depiction of the main character (from behind) facing an obstacle...
---> rename it: "Portrayals of confrontation with the enemy", and then list the different techniques they are using (the different images they use to confront the enemy: it could be portrayed in different ways.
Confrontation with the enemy could be depicted by:
- a man carrying a gun and running.
- a man with his back to the camera
- a man on a tank
- a man on a horse
---> focus on the concepts, and then fill them with technical examples.
No point in analyzing "31" photos in details.
- Organize your thoughts.
- Focus on concepts
- Allegorization "of women" (don't just call it: allegorization).
- How are these young adults recruited?
- How are photos manipulated graphyically to affect yound adults psychologically?
Give number of representation:
for example:
of "happiness": "in the 13 issues I have looked at, there are # of men looking at the camera and smiling.
feeling of "reward":....
How do they represent psychological aspects graphically?
